Listen now: The 2018 KEF R Series with us

Jetzt probehören: Die KEF R-Serie 2018 bei uns

Overview

The 2018 version of the R-series includes three floor-standing speakers (R5, R7, R11), one compact (R3) and one center speaker (R2c), as well as the Dolby Atmos surround speaker R8a. Additionally, the Kube series subwoofers are optionally available to complete the sound image in the low bass range. The design and cabinet profile tend to be based on the Reference series, which is most evident in the large R11, whose four woofers are quite reminiscent of the Reference 5. A total of three color options are available – in addition to the white and black high-gloss versions, there is a variant with walnut real wood veneer (and bronze-colored drivers!)

Cabinet Construction, Drivers & Crossover

Let's stay with the cabinet construction for a moment: Compared to the previous series, the speakers are all slimmer, but taller. Accordingly, the internal bracing was redesigned – again, the Reference series served as a model – and newly developed cabinet stiffeners made of vibration-damping material were also installed. All three floor-standing speakers also feature solid metal feet, which give the transducers a secure stand.

The KEF Uni-Q Driver with Shadow Flare

The redesign of the cabinets naturally led to adjustments in the positioning of the drivers and the bass reflex port, which were also technologically brought up to date. KEF's well-known Uni-Q, now in its 12th generation, is the first to be mentioned here. KEF engineers have paid particular attention to an improved design at the transition between the midrange and tweeter, thus even more effectively preventing colorations caused by resonances. In order to also prevent influences on high-frequency performance from possible cabinet reflections, the "Shadow Flare" principle from the Reference series was adapted. The special reflection surface around the Uni-Q driver supports the point source character of the system and particularly benefits the detail reproduction of percussion or string instruments.

The improved bass drivers of the KEF R-Series 2018

A completely new motor is used for the bass driver, and at the same time, the linear excursion has doubled compared to the old R-series. This ensures that even high sound pressure levels are precisely reproduced. Finally, the crossover was thoroughly tested and optimized. For example, new, much lower-distortion coils ensure higher signal fidelity.

Preliminary Conclusion

As mentioned at the beginning, we already had the opportunity to get an impression of the KEF R-Series 2018 – this applies in particular to the large R11. Its performance, in conjunction with electronics from Marantz, can be described simply as impressive. The rich, yet controlled bass was just as convincing as the well-tuned and finely resolved midrange and high-frequency reproduction. We will get to know all models more closely in the coming weeks, but it is already clear that a listening session here is definitely worthwhile.
