If you love vinyl, you should consider using a phono preamplifier. The traditional British manufacturer has just released two new high-quality models, named Solo and Duo. Their purpose is to preserve the natural sound of vinyl records. Let's first look at their commonalities before we identify the differences.
Solo and Duo each have an all-metal casing, with the front made of aluminum. Both are available in graphite grey and are characterized by their compact design. To achieve this, Cambridge Audio developed special switching power supplies. In addition, they also promise fast response, great stability, and minimal noise interference. Since SMD components are used, which are soldered directly to the circuit board with solderable pads, the signal-to-noise ratio is particularly remarkable. A balance control on the back of the device compensates for any volume asymmetries between the right and left channels. Subsonic filters are also used to minimize noise interference caused by unevenness on the record.
The integrated standby function is particularly practical: power consumption automatically reduces to below 0.5 watts if the device is not used for 20 minutes.
All this ensures that with these two phono preamplifiers, the unique sound of precious vinyl records can once again fill the modern music room.
MM Phono Preamplifier Solo
Solo is the smaller of the two phono preamplifiers. It was designed to handle Moving Magnet cartridges, i.e., systems with stationary coils. Additionally, the Solo has a simple LED light on the front.
MM and MC Phono Preamplifier Duo
The larger sibling, Duo, on the other hand, has two inputs and accepts signals from both Moving Magnet and Moving Coil cartridges. MC refers to systems with moving coils. In principle, two turntables can even be connected to the preamplifier. Bonus points are awarded for the integrated 6.35 mm headphone input. This offers advantages, as it allows records to be enjoyed without an amplifier and speakers thanks to the high-quality headphone amplifier, and it also allows analog fans to enjoy music without a separate headphone amplifier. The Duo also has a volume control on the front.
The new phono preamplifiers from Cambridge Audio are ideal entry-level models, but even connoisseurs will find Solo and Duo satisfying. Since Solo and Duo offer a low-noise electrical environment, they are perfectly suited for processing the sensitive signal from a turntable cartridge.
