REL Acoustics, Ltd. in Bridgend, Wales, was founded in 1990 by Richard Edmund Lord. Displeased with the commercially available subwoofers at the time, Lord set out to build a better subwoofer himself. News quickly spread about a Welshman who produced these incredibly good-sounding sub-bass systems. Soon, audiophiles were on the lookout for these legendary subs, which were built so differently.
In 2005, REL was acquired by John Hunter and Donald Brody. They recognized REL's phenomenal potential, identified key elements to embrace and expand upon REL's core philosophy. Firstly, they modernized the aesthetics so that the woofers looked as good as they sounded. Secondly, building on the solid characteristics of the existing sub-bass systems, there was room for improvement in electronics and driver technology. Consequently, Hunter and Brody forged a comprehensive plan to upgrade and enhance every aspect of the products, with a focus on durability, clear design, and robust construction – a path that continues to this day.
