Samsung 2013 Roadshow

Samsung 2013 Road Show

One of these is the UltraHD-TV S9 in the 85-inch version (216 cm). The design alone shows that Samsung is boldly breaking new ground and apparently implementing customer wishes. The flat screen is supported by a frame that also functions as a stand and houses the speakers for the 5.1 surround system. The overall construction is reminiscent of an easel. Samsung calls this implementation "Timeless Design." The back of the S9 is pleasingly tidy and attractive – no sign of cable clutter, as all cables are bundled into a single strand.

Technically and in practice, the device is impressive: equipped with a quad-core processor and 1000Hz Micro Dimming Ultimate, the device speaks an unmistakable language: pure power. The high CPU performance enables lower-resolution material to be upscaled to 4k in stunning quality. For 3D playback, Samsung relies on active shutter glasses instead of polarized glasses, as practiced by Sony, LG, and Toshiba, for example. The small time delay achieved with shutter glasses allows for the creation of a 4k image for both eyes. However, active shutter glasses also have disadvantages, such as stronger ghosting and flickering effects, especially in brightly lit rooms. The latest, structurally revised version of SmartTV ensures comfortable operation with short response times. Of course, a WiFi module is included.

The equipment also includes: Twin Tuner (watch one program, record another, or watch one program on the TV and play a second via a tablet/smartphone), Sound Customizer with 40 watts, a separate subwoofer. When viewing program content, the exceptionally wide viewing angle is striking. Even when standing at a sharp angle to the TV, the picture impression appears complete and almost free of contrast and color losses, especially when native 4k material is fed to the prototype, as was the case at the Road Show. The image is almost noise-free, and the black level and brightness distribution are very good for an Edge LED TV. According to the manufacturer, the device is expected to be available at the end of April / beginning of May 2013 at a five-figure price.

Another device that impressed us: The Samsung UE 55F8590, available from May 2013.

The device first captivates with its elegant appearance (see photos): equipped with a brushed aluminum frame and an elegantly curved base. The back of the device is also very well designed, also made entirely of metal and solidly screwed. A cover that can be locked and removed by a magnetic mechanism conceals or exposes the connection terminal. Thus, the UE55F8590 also cuts a very good figure, especially when freestanding. A retractable camera, e.g., for Skype, is integrated into the upper part of the frame. Samsung sees the F8590, among other things, as a design outlook for upcoming model series. Of course, the F8590 is also equipped for future Evolution Kits.
