Craft Your Sound – A New Dimension of Personalized High-Fidelity
With the PD20, Astell&Kern introduces an entirely new concept in portable high-resolution players. Instead of continuing an existing product line, this model was developed from the ground up under the philosophy "Craft Your Sound."
The PD20 is therefore much more than a classic music player – it understands itself as a personal sound laboratory that precisely adapts music playback to the individual listening habits of its user.
Personalized Sound through Integrated Hearing Analysis
For the first time, Astell&Kern integrates a direct hearing analysis with individual sound calibration into a Digital Audio Player. Developed in collaboration with Audiodo, the integrated Personal Sound System analyzes personal hearing characteristics, taking into account the left and right ears separately.
Users perform a guided hearing test directly on the device with the included precision measurement earphones. Based on this, the PD20 creates an individual hearing profile that is precisely tailored to personal perception.
The result is a more balanced, natural, and often more detailed sound image that precisely adapts to one's own hearing ability.
Sound Master Wheel – Real-time Sound Control
In addition to automatic sound personalization, the PD20 offers direct manual control over the sound balance via the specially developed Sound Master Wheel.
- 160-step EQ fine-tuning
- Adjustment range from –8.0 dB to +8.0 dB
- Separate control for bass, mids, and highs
- Adjustment without interrupting playback
This physical control allows for particularly intuitive and precise fine-tuning of the sound – anytime and in real-time.
Triple-AMP Architecture – Three Sound Characteristics to Choose From
Inside the PD20 works a newly developed Triple-AMP Architecture, which allows for instant switching between three different amplifier characteristics:
Class A Warm, dense sound reproduction with particularly smooth, analog texture and minimal distortion.
Class AB A balanced combination of efficiency and dynamics with precise control and high performance.
Hybrid Combines the sonic smoothness of Class A with the stability and power reserve of Class AB.
In Class A and Hybrid modes, the amplifier current can also be adjusted in three stages:
High Maximum power reserve for high-impedance headphones, large soundstage, and confident control.
Mid Balanced blend of sound density, resolution, and natural vocal reproduction.
Low Optimized for sensitive in-ear monitors with particularly low background noise and high detail resolution.
This allows the player to be optimally tuned to a wide range of headphones and IEMs.
Quad-DAC Architecture with ESA and Advanced DAR
The heart of the PD20 is a true Quad-DAC configuration with four ESS ES9027PRO Digital-to-Analog Converters. By operating multiple DACs in parallel, channel crosstalk is reduced and signal separation is maximized.
In addition, Astell&Kern's proprietary ESA technology (Enhanced Signal Alignment) is used. It precisely synchronizes frequency signals and reduces so-called Group Delay effects, leading to higher clarity and more precise spatial imaging.
Also integrated is the second generation of Advanced DAR (Digital Audio Remaster) Technology, first used in the flagship Astell&Kern SP4000. In combination with VSE (Virtual Sound Extender), lost overtones are virtually reconstructed and then upscaled – for a more intense listening experience, without distorting the character of the original recording.
Audiosphere – Spatial Sound Beyond Stereo
With the integrated Audiosphere technology, the PD20 expands classic stereo playback into a virtual three-dimensional sound field.
Four presets are available:
- Subtle
- Balanced
- Immersive
- Echoic
This allows for flexible adjustment of the spatial representation to different music styles or content – from intimate recordings to large-scale orchestral or cinematic productions.
