It was entirely developed and engineered by DALI in Denmark. The K60 LP is a ceiling and wall loudspeaker that, despite its extremely flat dimensions, offers first-class sound quality, even in the low-frequency range.
The PHANTOM K-60 LP has an installation depth of only 36.5 mm (from the inner side of the baffle to the rear). Nevertheless, its acoustic performance and sound quality are comparable to those of conventional ceiling and wall loudspeakers of similar size but with significantly greater installation depth.
Innovation in Woofer/Midrange Driver Design
The architecture of the K-60 LP woofer/midrange driver is a new development by the DALI engineering team, inspired by the extensive experience gained from the flat bass drivers of the DALI KATCH ONE and G2.
The principle of the new K-60 LP driver's shallow depth involves three primary modifications to a conventional driver architecture, which, in combination, enable a drastic reduction in installation depth without compromising acoustic performance or reducing maximum diaphragm excursion.
Acoustics of the Woofer/Midrange Driver
The new design of the woofer/midrange driver showcases the complex 3D shape of the pressed and anodized aluminum diaphragm. The choice of aluminum for the diaphragm was necessary to achieve the stiffness and strength required given the driver's architecture. Additionally, the diaphragm incorporates seven stiffening ribs for added rigidity.
The stiffening ribs also provide a channel for the voice coil lead wires – a small detail, but it actually leads to improved maximum diaphragm excursion. As a result of the complex diaphragm geometry, the K-60 LP's woofer/midrange driver operates piston-like over a wide range, achieving a level almost unknown in similar installation loudspeakers.
No Back Box Required
The K-60 LP performs excellently even without a back box. It is particularly useful where there is minimal installation depth. However, the K-60 LP also works well with a niche/concrete box > recommended volume from 5 liters.
To achieve this, the low-frequency characteristics of the K-60 LP woofer/midrange driver were specifically developed to operate within a wide range of rear air volumes, as well as in compact volumes. The diaphragm suspension is tuned to provide the retaining force that an air cushion from a back box would otherwise offer. Despite its flat design, the K-60 LP driver is capable of reproducing low-frequency levels with its maximum diaphragm excursion of ±7 mm.
Perfect Tweeter
Although the K-60 LP's woofer/midrange driver is a technical highlight, the 25mm soft-dome tweeter also offers interesting details. The K-60 LP's tweeter was derived from the 28mm tweeters in DALI Hi-Fi models. Quite unusually for a ceiling loudspeaker, the tweeter is equipped with a damped rear volume. The intentionally lower resonance frequency allows the tweeter to operate further down the frequency band.
EQ
The K-60 LP features a switchable high-frequency EQ with "Normal" and "High+" options – to deliver more energy to the listening position when listening significantly off-axis.
