Stax SR-009D – The Return of an Electrostatic Legend
The Stax SR-009D brings back one of the most iconic models from the Japanese high-end manufacturer – modernized, more accessible, and technically closer than ever to the brand's current top models. Building on the legendary SR-009, the new SR-009D is aimed at demanding audiophiles seeking maximum transparency, speed, and detail resolution.
High-End Electrostatic with MLER Technology
At the heart of the SR-009D is the renowned MLER (Multi-Layer Electrode) technology, which was already introduced with the original SR-009 and later formed the basis for models such as the SR-009S and SR-X9000. Through a special diffusion process, the electrodes are bonded at an atomic level, reducing resonances and enabling extremely precise signal transmission. The result is an exceptionally fast, airy, and high-resolution sound character.
The large, round electrostatic diaphragm ensures an enormously open soundstage, the finest micro-dynamics, and impressive separation of individual instruments. Voices, acoustic instruments, and complex recordings, in particular, benefit from the enormous precision of this system.
Modernized Construction and Improved Handling
Compared to the original SR-009, the SR-009D has been modernized in several respects. This includes, in particular, the new interchangeable cable system, which not only facilitates maintenance and repair but also allows for future cable upgrades.
In addition, STAX uses a newly developed, injection-molded housing for weight reduction. Together with the revised headband and high-quality sheepskin ear pads, this significantly improves long-term comfort. The open-back design also supports the exceptionally natural and free reproduction for which electrostatic STAX systems are known worldwide.
Sound Character
The SR-009D's sound is clearly on the analytical-precise side, but it combines this with a smoother and more musical tuning than earlier 009 variants. Particularly noteworthy are:
- exceptional detail resolution
- extremely fast transients
- precise, deeply layered soundstage
- very natural mids
- finely resolved, non-aggressive highs
- improved bass pressure compared to older STAX generations
As with all electrostatic STAX models, the SR-009D also requires a suitable energizer or electrostatic headphone amplifier with 580V Pro Bias.
